We’re bringing on some new faces this summer to our software development team! This series will introduce each of the three interns and the goals for their internships. Without further ado, meet Jorge Rocha!
Hello! My name is Jorge and I am currently a rising Senior at Cornell University studying Computer Science. Originally from Texas, I have comfortably adjusted to life in the Northeast, as it is nice to have four seasons throughout the year — however, winter in Ithaca goes far too long!
For the past few years, I have developed a number of technical skills. Between front-end and back-end web development, I have more experience with front-end, working with technologies like Bootstrap, D3.js, jQuery, SVG, and Angular, but also have worked with back-end technologies like Django and Python. Apart from web development, I have knowledge regarding Information Retrieval (i.e. search engines), Data Visualization (D3.js), Functional Programming (OCaml), and Systems Programming in C.
During my time at RebateBus, there are primarily two goals that should be accomplished. The first goal is to develop a system of detecting changes with various utility rebate programs. Such a system can be actualized by creating a Redis cache of rebate program updates and using a regularly scheduled cron job which looks at those updates to form a notification queue. This queue will initially send HTML Email summaries and will expand to a general notification system for the site. The second goal is to engineer a smarter algorithmic feed that presents a user with a curated list of relevant items. The feed will incorporate appropriate machine learning techniques given the data set (we need to match the number of features available and what is feasible given those features).

We’re looking forward to leveraging Jorge’s machine learning and data science expertise to expand the feature set of Rebate Bus!
